Lake Erie Farms Specialty Lettuces

Specialty Lettuces

Even when it’s snowing outside, fresh, ultra nutritious, local lettuce is available for our salad bowls. At Lake Erie Farms we produce a varied selection of lettuces. You will see our lettuces offer excellent “plate appeal” with a full assortment of texture, shape, and vibrant colouring.

Our crops are grown in high-tech greenhouses specifically made to meet the highest possible requirements. The greenhouses are clear structures that use solar radiation to warm the plants. Their contained environment helps our grower control light, temperature, pests and other factors that ensure a reliable source of food for our community. Product quality, food safety, and environmental sustainability are all paramount in our greenhouse operation.

Our growing systems offer many benefits in terms of nutritional content, product quality, shelf life performance and environmental sustainability.  We start our growing process with high quality seeds that are then nurtured in an ideal environment to bring out the best in the plant.

The greenhouse offers the plants a protected, ideal environment which translates into a strong fast growing plant. The greenhouse reduces insect pressure and makes it easier to detect and control insects. We only use biological controls (the reduction of pest populations by natural insect enemies) in the cultivation of our lettuce crops. Thus the need for pesticides is eliminated.

We do not waste water! Water is recycled and reused wherever possible. We have the proper equipment in place to conserve water and recycle it while ensuring that it remains healthy and safe. Year-round production is only possible in Canada with accurate greenhouse climate control, including the integration of supplemental lighting in some cases where lighting is required. We program our lighting to occur during off-peak hours in order to not add additional load during high-demand hours.

At Lake Erie Farms, our R&D department is constantly striving to improve our quality products, our growing techniques, and our environmental footprint.

We are the largest contract private label greenhouse-grower of Boston Bibb Lettuce in Ontario. Our Boston Bibb and other specialty lettuces can be found at most major grocery chains under the Queen Victoria or Sunset Produce labels in both single and dual clam packs.  Our new Trio Mix offers customers three varieties of red and green lettuces in one living lettuce head.

We produce several other Salanova® products which are sold into both the Foodservice market and to specialty retail through our own La Salette Brand.  We work with our customers to meet their pack needs, featuring varying lettuce varieties/mixes in both bulk and clam shell form cases.

These product’s offer consumers an alternative to imported bagged salads.  Our living lettuces come in a variety of colours and textures for consumers to create their own custom salad.  They are one cut, ready!  With just one cut, the lettuce separates into numerous, small, ready to eat baby leaves.  Or alternatively, just cut the leaves you wish to consume that meal and leave the rest so they stay fresh.  Most importantly, these lettuces offer a superior shelf life and are grown without the use of pesticides.

Salanova® is one of Europe’s leading lettuce brands.  At Lake Erie Farms Inc., Salanova® is grown as a living lettuce (with rootball) to mazimize freshness and shelf-life. Salanova® will outperform baby spinach, baby arugula and artisan lettuce in taste, mass-volume, loft and shelf life.

This makes Salanova® affordable at all levels of foodservice. Once you try Salanova® , you won’t want any other lettuce. Salanova® offers a wide range of flavours, shapes and colours not available elsewhere in Canada.

Our living lettuce should be stored in the refrigerator in the container in came in as it provides the perfect micro-climate. Thanks to its root-ball, it keeps its freshness and crispness for a long time, especially if you give the root-ball a drop of water periodically. Break the leaves off from the root-ball as you wish to consume them and leave the rest of the leaves intact to retain maintain their freshness!ct to retain maintain their freshness!
